1. GO ON AN UNDERWATER SAFARI

A snorkel trip (or scuba diving for age 12 and over) will get your kids up close to an amazing reef. If you go with a marine biologist guide theyíll point out some highlights from coloured fish and turtles to coral. You might even see an Eagle ray.

2. TAKE A SUNSET CRUISE

Most luxury resorts offer sunset cruises, which will take you out into the middle of nowhere to enjoy unspoiled views of the sun setting over the ocean. Best of all the gentle lapping of the waves will rock the children into a dreamlike state just before bedtime. For the sweetest of dreams.

3. A CULTURAL VISIT

Most islands are postage stamp Ė sized and can be explored pretty quickly so it is great to visit other islands if you can. Ideally a local island where children can get a taste of traditional culture is a good idea.

4. PLAY WITH PHYTOPLANKTON

Although the Maldives isnít the only place where this natural phenomenon occurs, the appearance of it bioluminesce phytoplankton does occur here closer to shore more frequently. If you are lucky a night time stroll along the shore will give you a chance to see glowing phytoplankton. Children can run up and down the shore and try to ignite a bright reaction.

5. AN OVER WATER MASSAGE

OK, well to be honest this one is for the adults in the party, but why not? Having a massage in an over water pavilion if your resort has one makes the experience that bit more special. And lying there listening to real waves lap against the shore beats those ocean sounds spa CDs every time.
