MINI ME

Luxury hotels are now treating your children exactly like a tiny version of you, right down to the mini-sized designer bathrobes.

WORDS Debbie Neilson-Hunter

Girls love walking in adult shoes - quite literally. In fact, many four-year-olds totter about in a pair of heels better than their mothers. Children, the world over, love playing grownups - even on holiday.

Evidence shows that five-star kids of today don't just want their faces painted, a pony ride and an ice cream on their family getaway; they want the same experiences as their parents. Luxury hotels and resorts are indulging these childhood fantasies by opening the doors of their day spas, elegant tea salons and even golf courses to children and teens as well as the adults. And while we, as parents, might lament this rush to grow up too soon, it's a rare chance to nurture new interests while enjoying quality time together.

Mini-me's abound in the guest rooms too and two of the hottest items on the list of hotel room must-haves these days are child-sized bathrobes and slippers.

“Kids and parents are happy to have these amenities as it makes children feel like equal guests in the hotel," adds Ruta Biknuite from the Four Seasons Hotel London, Park Lane, which provides 100 percent cotton Cypress bathrobes for kids from the age of three to adult size. You can even take one home for £50.

Kids at London's Ritz hotel are equally spoiled with a range of exclusive privileges including unlimited complimentary ice cream and Ritz robes to wear that are identical to mum and dad's in every detail but size.

The robes, which come with matching slippers, have been available as part of the Kidz@TheRitz Club for three years. They are also available to buy in the hotel and online as gifts for £45. And why wouldn't you splash out? Made from luxurious Egyptian cotton they come in white in the rooms with blue or pink piping and are made exclusively for the hotel by Morvan & Noel.

Guests at The Plaza Athénée in Paris, a Dorchester hotel, can also arrange to have their bespoke mini-robes and slippers in their room on arrival. They are white in rooms but you can also buy them at the hotel or online in riding-hood-red for €100.

Pint-sized guests at the Four Seasons Sydney enjoy snuggling up in bed after a bath - with a ham and cheese toasty from the room-service kids menu and a blockbuster movie of course! Custom-made in Australia and carrying the hotel logo, the [terry] robes are placed in the room ahead of the family's arrival if the ages of the children are provided in advance, hotel spokeswoman Sarah Vickery says. "They can also be delivered on request."

At the tip of the Whitsunday Islands, ideally positioned at the heart of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Hayman Island is a luxury destination for families wanting to experience the natural beauty of the region, above and below the tropical waters. They offer a range of special activities for children, including etiquette classes. Once they’ve learned five star manners you can also request five star mini bathrobes for your children.

Aman Resorts has kids covered, especially Amanjiwo in Borobudur, Java in Indonesia which provides all natural cotton kids bathrobes (kimono-style which are better suited to warmer weather) in two sizes (3-8 and 8-12), plus (locally grown) cotton slippers and hats made from the local pandan leaf. Amandari in Ubud, Bali also provides 200 thread-count cotton robes to fit children under 10. They come with green cotton slippers.

"Kids love it when they see how we display their own slippers adjacent to their parents on arrival," says Aman Resorts' spokesperson Anjali Nihalchand.

Similarly Amankila kids are decked out in fine calico flip flops (in sizes 3-6) and matching kimono-style ivory cotton robes, while included in their goodie bag along with colouring books and toiletries, is a kiddie sarong.

Mini-robes 'in the plushest cotton terry’ are currently available to the junior jet set at selected Trump hotels. New mum Ivanka Trump wouldn't have it any other way. The plan is to eventually make them available in a range of sizes throughout the Trump Hotel Collection as part of its revamped Trump Kids program which provides a range of luxury child services including teen spa treatments and a Trump Kids/Baby Attaché.

"No guest is an afterthought, no matter his or her age." says Trump Kids creator Robert Prohaska, director of sales and marketing at Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago.

Kimpton Hotels, recently named by Parents magazine as the top hotel chain for US families nationwide, is also a big hit with kids, who especially love the mini leopard print robes which every 'wild child' gets to wear during their visit. We expect a few mums and dads will be asking for them too.
