My husband and I, together with our children and grandchildren had a wonderful holiday in Fiji last year. We stayed at the Shangri-La Fijiian (my husband and I have stayed there many times) and chose that because: 1. We like to stay in a resort as there is nothing to do but enjoy ourselves and spend quality time with the family. 2. They have a kid's club where the younger ones can be entertained in safety and give the adults some 'free' time. 3. The pools are just wonderful and are a most enjoyable way to interact with the littlies. 4. The mothers took the children on a bus tour to an Eco Park, which was a big hit with all. 5. In the evenings the children were able to attend a disco and the resort also offered mini-golf along with movies, games and treasure hunts. The grandchildren had a wonderful, happy time which is evidenced by the attached photo! We hope to have another family holiday there again next year. I feel it is important to go somewhere where the children are happy and have lots to do and we are always looking for new ideas. Jennifer Powell/Parsons

Our family (me, my husband, our 4 year old Theodore and 8 month old Bethany) visited Fiji for the first time in May this year. We had 8 nights at the Shangri La Fijian Resort and it was just lovely the weather was also perfect every day, which made it easy to make good use of the three pools! All of the staff were wonderful with the kids, not just those who worked in the kids club (where our son chose to spend at least a few hours every day). I think the best bit by far was the lunch-time entertainment for kids, whereby we could have a leisurely lunch while he had his face painted, did some puzzles or just played with the staff and other kids.
We probably wouldn't go back to a big resort until both kids are old enough to make the most of it, which we think is about 5+. We would however go back to Fiji again before that and stay in a boutique resort or rent a house with friends who also have small children. We enjoyed exploring the local villages, but our son just wanted to go back to the holiday house, so it certainly has his vote of approval! Julie from Canberra

This was our first perfect, idealistic and affordable, family holiday. This resort is rated 4 1/2 stars, so luxurious enough to spoil everyone without the snob value and accompanying prices of a 5 star. The best part is the local Fijian Staff, who are warm and friendly and absolutely love and adore children. The kids club - Little Chiefs - is FREE!!!!
We also joined the Shangri La Hotels group's loyal club - The Golden Circle Club, which gave us other benefits in terms of room upgrades and discount meals. Shangri La now also has resorts in Australia, so there are added benefits.
The resort is so beautiful and picturesque that you can stay ensconced in your own little heaven, or there is a short bus ride to the nearby city.
The local, native village is very aligned with the resort, so it is possible to immerse oneself in the local, Fijian culture and to remind our kids, just how lucky and privileged we are in our rich Western lifestyle by letting them see and observe first hand, how "others" live, eat, sleep and learn.
This holiday was so perfect that we did it a few years in a row, and gave the grown ups a great break, when the kids were young. FANTASTIC! Charlotte Frajman

We stayed at the Fijian what a wonderful resort filled with lots of family fun activities. The children loved it especially the hot dog ride, swimming in the wonderful lagoon pools and the nightly shows were a hit also. The activities that the resort offers are great and such a great way to get the families involved. We loved the people they made the holiday that more enjoyable. We would recommend this resort to everyone as it is such a welcoming, warm and friendly place to stay. Lolita Opasinov

Last year, I travelled with my 7 and 3 year old girls to the Shangri-la at Fiji. I'm a single mum, it was our first trip overseas alone and I wanted to make sure that I could cope with handling two children on my own. I more than coped and we had a great time, the girls constantly talk about wanting to go back. The people of Fiji are fantastic, as soon as they noticed that it was just the girls and I, help came from everywhere. The Shangri-la was fantastic and the girls loved the activities there - including language classes, grass skirt making, crab races and dancing. Both the children and I also enjoyed the food and the swimming pools. We did two excursions. One captain's cooks cruise to an outer island where the girls tried their hand at snorkelling and loved. The second on a trip called the Jewel of Fiji. I was keen to get the children to experience culture, not just a resort and this was certainly a highlight of the trip. We went inland, to a village by boat. We ate a traditional meal and watched traditional crafts being made and some dancing. But by far the most memorable experience was watching my 3 year old, join in on the local kinder activities with the local children. Samantha Ritter

I would love to share our families experience to Fiji. Our first trip to Fiji was when our daughter was 11 months again at 23 months. We stayed at the Shangri- La Fijian on the Coral Coast both times which is only 3/4 hour drive from the airport. It has a fabulous kid's club and the supervisors are excellent, not to mention a very reasonable price for a babysitter if needed. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed mixing with all the children and the variety of different activities were excellent. Her favourite activity was walking down to the pier holding onto a rope along with all the other kids then feeding the fish. As parents we loved the lagoon to snorkel and paddle the kayak. The Fijian people are so friendly and love children. Our daughter was saying Bula to everyone by the second day! Melissa MacBeath

We went to Fiji with our kids aged 6&4 and stayed at the Shrangra-la resort. It was great as the kids ate free and all the kids activities (including the kids club)were free. We weren't going to use the kidsclub but on the second day they came around asking if the kids would like to go out on a glass-bottomed boat to look for clown fish. Of course the kids said YES!! Every morning and afternoon after that the kids begged us to let them go to the kids club. The activities were great and the staff were amazing!!!! The day we left the staff at the kids club said good-bye to the kids and the lovely grandfather-like supervisor even shed a tear. The kids club organised a trip for children and parents to a local village where many of the resort workers lived. Our children got to play with the local kids and find out a little bit about their lives. They all made us feel very welcome and the kids still talk about it and constantly ask us when we can go back. We chose a resort as it is convenient for a family to access services and activities and they provide food, so you don't need to worry about shopping or cooking. They also service the rooms daily and the lovely staff would leave flowers behind the ears of our childrens stuffed toys or even tuck them into bed. Twice we used their in-room babysitters. They were great! Just like a grandma would be. They took them for dinner and to a movie or other night time activities for the children. We have since recommended it to lots of friends and family and i'm sure the memories will last with us for a long time to come. Lisa Buttigieg.

Where did you stay? Shangri-La Resort Why was it so good for your family? - 3 kids under 4 and two fitted into the Kids Club with entrance age starting at 2yo, gave parents a break. - ground floor ocean view room great size to fit 1 King size bed, two large divans that became two kids' beds, and 1 cot for the baby. Very large bathroom, great to change wet kids from the beach and hang up the wet gear. - Cute little shaded verandah to sit outside out of the sun which then opened onto a beautiful, lush, green grass expanse (great for kids) - great view from room, across grass, and onto beautiful beach. Minimal waves so very relaxing. - buffet breakfast fab variety and loved the local fruit and eggs. Lunch was best for kids and kept them going. Dinner for kids option was great, having choice of any of the buffet. Great that adults didn't have to eat at same place and could eat at different restaurants once kids had their meal and could play. Did it have a kids club and if so, did you use it? Yes and yes daily. Great to have three sessions of morning, arvo, dinner. Mainly used morning and some arvo, depending on how the beach looked and what activities were on. Didn't use dinner time session as we were all quite tired and happy to have early relaxing nights. How did the kids like it? They loved it, learning about the Fijian culture: songs, making grass skirts, playing games, face painting, vocabulary. What sort of activities did your family do- tell us your favourite activities and any tours that you loved. - going to a local church service and meeting the local families and kids - eating local food at Sigatoka - crab hunting on the beach in the morning and evening (and letting them go, of course) - making sandcastles with the white sand and great array of shells - going on the sugar cane train and meeting the "bula" men in their local fighting outfits!! - enjoying the local singing and general chats with staff in resort and locals out of resort - kids and adults enjoyed the options of snorkelling, windsurfing, general playing in sea and pool. - girls had hair braided

Where did you stay? Shangri-La Why was it so good for your family? I went with my two children 2 & 4, Husband 30, Parents 55 years, 4 other friends around the age of 50 and I was pregnant with my 3rd child and there was everything for all of us. Stayed 12 nights and it was not long enough. Did it have a kids club and if so, did you use it? Yes an excellent one. They were in every second day. How did the kids like it? Love it X 10. That was 2 years ago and they still talk about it. What sort of activities did your family do- tell us your favourite activities and any tours that you loved. Snorkelling, Did a day cruise the day after we got married. (we went there to get married), we drove around the whole of Fiji. I would recommend not doing that a day after it rained. But was a very good experience. Jet Ski. Fire dancing, golf, massages, Kids club, lots of walking around, swam in all the pools, more snorkelling, and lots of relaxing. Oh year the kids went fishing. Best place in the world, we are going back for our 3 wedding anniversary next year. 3 August 2010 Sarah Winbank |
