4 things to do with kids in Japan

Japan is an exciting, interesting and safe place to visit with kids. From modern technology, gadgets and toys to ancient cultures and iconic sites there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

1. Spend a few days at Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea

Tokyo Disneyland offers seven themed lands of fun, entertainment and rides for all ages. It's the first Disney theme park to open outside of the United States. Kids will love the crazy style Disney hats here and the seemingly never- ending supply of flavoured popcorn on offer all around the park.

Disney Sea is the second theme park located within the Tokyo Disney Resort complex. Inspired by the myths and legends of the sea, it offers seven themed ports full of unique attractions and entertainment. You can take a ride in a gondola down a canal in Venice or journey to the centre of the Earth all in one day.

2. Try the local cuisine

Japanese cuisine offers a range of interesting delights from savoury dishes to sweet desserts and unique themed restaurants with ninjas and robots, there is plenty to experience. At most food establishments you can see your food displayed as plastic models as you enter which makes ordering so much easier and a lot of fun. Take the kids to a Sushi train restaurant so they can choose their meals from a conveyor belt and practice eating with chop sticks. Our kids loved the famous Japanese crepe stand called Marion crepe Harajuku Takeshita, where there were over 80 different crepes to choose from with fillings like ice-cream, fruit, brownies and cream.

3. Take a bullet train

A Japanese bullet train is a high-speed train that can run at speeds of up to 320km/h. Called Shinkansen, the trains are very efficient, very quiet, comfortable, spacious, safe and a very cost-effective means of travel. We travelled from Tokyo to Osaka by bullet train and it was one of the highlights of the trip for the kids. Throughout the journey the kids enjoyed the views of the countryside including Mt Fuji and snow-covered fields and villages. Snacks and drinks are available to purchase on-board however you’ll find a lot more options and variety by purchasing food and drinks in the huge food court located under the train station before boarding the train.

4. Spend a day at Universal Studios Osaka

Get ready for a magical day at Universal Studios with Hollywood themed rides and shows. There is plenty to keep movie buffs and thrill seekers entertained for the entire day. Kids will love seeing their favourite movies come to life with fun attractions including Minions and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. To save time and make the most of your day at Universal Studios, make sure you plan-ahead what rides and entertainment the family would like to experience and get to the park early. Universal City Walk has a great variety of value meal options and shops to explore.
