Review: The Sebel, Coolangatta

Queensland

When on holidays, staying in a serviced apartment with three kids can be a little squishy and hectic Ė but not if youíre right on the beach, have three rooms and enough space to swing a cat! We recently stayed at The Sebel Coolangatta, part of the Accor Hotels chain, and had just that, minus the cat swinging.

Just a five-minute drive from the Gold Coast Airport, and located on McLean Street, The Sebel has unrivalled views across Coolangatta Beach to Snapper Rocks. This is where all the international surfers hit the ocean for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, so you might say it has some fabulous surf.

What I loved most about this spot was the incredible location but also facilities at the hotel. The three bedroom apartment has two bathrooms, cooking facilities, a separate laundry (with a dryer) and a large dining table for the kids to fall asleep at while eating their dinner after a huge day of adventuring.

The Gold Coast rarely gets cold enough to be holed up indoors, and despite the late May temperature the kids loved hitting the beach and even the water.

At a mild 21 degrees Celsius, according to the lifeguard board, it was a tad chilly for me and I only lasted a few minutes. My daughter could have stayed in for hours but her brothers were happy chasing seagulls, making sandcastles and exploring. They all loved the Sebelís heated swimming pool because itís just the right depth for them to frolic in and feel safe.

Every morning we were greeted with the most spectacular sunrise from our balcony before our morning beach walk to collect shells or a play in the rock pools.

The southern end of the Gold Coast has fabulous boardwalks and bike paths so kids and adults alike can travel on bikes, scooters or skateboards for kilometres safely. There are also plenty of kidís playgrounds along the way. Keep your eyes out for a few large koala statues helping to raise awareness of the species.

There are plenty of kid-friendly eateries nearby including the Coolangatta Surf Club, which arguably has one of the best views in this neck of the woods. There are a lot of cafes for light snacks, coffee is fabulous and for those who want to cook instead of eating out The Strand shopping centre has two of the major supermarkets.

In the unlikely event that the weather isnít flash or itís too cold for outdoor fun, kids will love the inside arcade and entertainment centre and a cinema complex. Letís not forget parents who are on holiday, I noticed quite a few holidaymakers treating themselves to a mani/pedi in the shopping centre.

If you only have a few days up your sleeve, a three-night stay at The Sebel Coolangatta is just the trick. The kids will be knackered from their big day giving you some peace and quiet while you enjoy one of the best ocean views in the Gold Coast. Oh and bring your binoculars during whale watching season and you wonít be disappointed!

A Family-friendly Guide to the Gold Coast

More than three million visitors holiday on the Gold Coast each year, and many of them are families. After all, this is a playground for all ages, with plenty of options for couples, thrill seekers and singles out for a good time, but thereís no doubt that itís extra special for kids.
