Sydney Winter Weekend

Sydney’s sunshiny winter days are the perfect excuse to discover what the NSW capital has to offer.

There are plenty of reasons to love Sydney, whether you’re a local or a tourist. One of those reasons is the lovely, mild weather that Sydney enjoys. While summers can be warm and humid, winters are fairly cool with plenty of rainfall during June and a lot of sunshine in July. But the best part about the city is that there is always something for the whole family to enjoy, regardless of the weather. Here is a list of things that you and your family can enjoy doing in Sydney during the winter holidays. Bundle up, step out and enjoy!

Things to Do

Park play

Sydney enjoys its outdoor activities and nowhere is this more apparent than in the parks that dot the city. Enjoy a lovely picnic with your family at Hyde Park, visit the Archibald Fountain, and have the children learn some history at the Pool of Reflection and the Anzac Memorial. You could also head to Centennial Park which has a plethora of children’s activities ranging from Bush School to pony rides to kids’ golf and much more. At the Royal Botanic Garden you will find hectare upon hectare of trees, flowers, ponds and gardens, not to mention the unforgettable views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. A must visit is The Calyx, which houses the largest living wall in the Southern Hemisphere.

Australian Museum

For an interesting afternoon among prehistoric creatures, head up William Street to Australia’s first museum. Established in 1827 (190 years ago!), the museum houses a dinosaur exhibition which has up to eight life-size recreations of various dinos and 10 complete skeletons. In addition, throughout the school holidays, children can join the creative writing workshop known as The Travel Bug; learn Kids Animal Yoga; take part in the Light Up Your Life Science Workshop; or even learn about wildlife photography. A day spent at this museum is hugely entertaining for everyone.

Where to Stay

Potts Point

When you're looking to spend a winter weekend in Sydney, you're going to need a good base of operations. Nothing will work better for you than the Holiday Inn situated in Potts Point. Called the village that never sleeps, Potts Point has been around for a long time and is as bustling in the morning hours with its bakeries and cafes as it is in the evening with restaurants and bars. One of the oldest neighbourhoods in Sydney, it features a diverse mix of architecture ranging from Victorian to Art Deco. The streets and alleys are lined with trees, cafes, shops and stores. The best part is that Potts Point is close to everything, from the city centre to Bondi Beach.

Family Perks at the Holiday Inn

Staying at the Holiday Inn at Potts Point comes with its own set of perks for your family. For one thing, children under 19 can stay for free. There are large family rooms that can accommodate 2 adults and 2 kids and most rooms have amazing city views. There is also the popular 'Kids Glamp Out' where you have your own tee pee camp with snuggly toys and games set up in your room. The kids will love this and it's available all year round.

The hotel restaurant, Sirocco, has a new look and new menu including a fabulous and healthy Kids Menu that children under 12 can enjoy for free. If you want to venture out for a bite, other places that are great for families include Tropicana, Harry’s Café de Wheels, Mad Pizza and Fratelli Fresh, all within walking distance to the hotel.
