3 special ways to experience Thanksgiving

New York City

1. The Balloon Inflation

On Thanksgiving Eve in the streets around the American Museum of Natural History you can watch the balloon inflation for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and get a sneak peak of the balloons that will appear in the parade.

Balloons begin to take shape around 4:30pm with the last admission to the balloon inflation area being around 9:15pm. The Giant balloons mainly consist of pop-culture characters and once inflated with helium require around 30 to 100 people with strings to hold them in the air.

Kids will love seeing their favourite characters such as Spiderman and Buzz lightyear come to life before their eyes. Visiting the Balloon inflation is a great opportunity for photos as you can get quite close to the action.

2. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade run by the department store chain has been going since 1924. It’s one of NYC’s favourite traditions with most of America tuning in to watch it live on TV. The parade includes giant balloons, marching bands, celebrities, floats, cheerleaders and clowns.

Grab yourself a pumpkin spiced latte and secure your spot of choice in the streets of Manhattan to watch at least an hour before the parade starts. We found a great viewing area along 6th Ave and 56th street. The contrast of the city buildings with the giant balloons and the carnival like atmosphere is truly a unique and captivating experience.

Kids will enjoy eating fairy floss while watching their favourite characters as giant balloons pass by high above their heads. Santa’s arrival is the perfect ending to the parade and the best way to mark the start of the Christmas season.

3. Thanksgiving dinner

Thanksgiving dinner is the main meal of the day so try and to book at least a month in advance. We enjoyed a three-course Thanksgiving Day dinner with all the trimmings at the iconic Loeb Boathouse in Central Park. Make sure you try a traditional Thanksgiving dish like turkey or pumpkin pie.

The restaurant is in a stunning lakeside location and is the perfect setting to celebrate any special occasion. The restaurant has a family friendly atmosphere, views overlooking the lake and is beautifully decorated for the holiday season.

It’s Location in the centre of Central Park is perfect for the kids to work up an appetite before dinner by running amongst the autumn leaves and playing in the nearby playground.
