Restaurant Review: The Bearded Dragon

Tamborine, QLD

If you’re holidaying in the Gold Coast or Brisbane you’ll no doubt have the scenic Mt Tamborine and picturesque Gold Coast Hinterland on your to-do list. After you’ve checked out the incredible sights, national parks and waterfalls, make sure you take time out to visit The Bearded Dragon; it’s located on 110 acres of farm and bushland in the foothills of Tamborine Mountains.

It has a charming country atmosphere and is built in classic old Queenslander style. But what’s so special about this place is that it’s a great place to bring the kids, especially on the weekends. During our most recent visit, on a Sunday, we were greeted with live music and lots of kids playing in the shaded playground – the kids couldn’t wait to get out of the car!

Dotted across the grounds are historical pieces of equipment, including a wooden wagon like the ones you’ll see in western movies. Kids will have a ball exploring the venue and get a huge kick from feeding some feisty alpacas around the back of the restaurant. The beauty of this venue is that you won’t have kids nagging you while you enjoy a meal or beverage, there’s so much for them to do.

On Sundays there’s a Crocodiles and Dragons reptile show on at 11.30 and 2.30pm, the show is also on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2pm. The weekday sessions are perfect for holidaymakers or parents with little ones because these shows aren’t as packed as the weekend ones. Furry, who is aptly named, hosts the show and asks for a gold cold donation which you’ll happily handover as kids get to see and touch snakes, large geckos, bearded dragons, a turtle and even a crocodile. Be warned, your children won’t want to leave.

The Bearded Dragon is a truly Aussie experience with a twist of traditional UK free house ambience, and the casual setting makes it a great place to spend a few hours. You’ll find it on the corner of Tamborine Mountain Road and Beenleigh Beaudesert Road, Tamborine Village.

When she’s not wrangling her three children, aged 3, 5 and 6, Gold Coaster and professional writer Emily Toxward juggles work, cooking for fussy children and parent helping at school. Escaping to the beach is her idea of paradise and writing about the trials and tribulations of life in an honest and humorous way on her blog .Have A Laugh On Me is her way of staying sane!
