A family Oasis in Byron

Tucked away in a picturesque spot not far from the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay’s town centre are The Oasis Apartments and Treetop Houses.

I was instantly smitten with the privacy and peacefulness of this property even though it is less than a minute’s drive south from the main part of town. Less than one hour by car from the Gold Coast, The Oasis has fully self-contained holiday apartments and treetop houses set across six-acres of tropical gardens.

The kids leaped from the car the moment we arrived at The Oasis keen to inspect nearby Tallow Beach; it is an interesting and easy 400-metre walk through the natural bushland of Arakwal National Park. Once we hit the sand we had uninterrupted views of Byron’s iconic lighthouse and pretty much the entire place to ourselves. I love the beach but not having to jostle for a spot or apologise when my kids accidentally kick sand in someone’s face. The 15km stretch of Tallow Beach is the perfect spot for those wanting to avoid big crowds.

We stayed in a modern two-bedroom apartment that featured a spacious open plan lounge and dining room, a large private balcony and the most comfortable recliner chairs ever! Having to share a bathroom with my kids is not my idea of a holiday so I was delighted to find there were two in our apartment, it’s the simple things in life that make all the difference when you’re a parent.

An outstanding feature of The Oasis is the communal kid’s room, it is unlike any other I have come across and not only has a separate TV area upstairs but a ping pong table, board games and an area for the smaller kids. While younger children might need supervision, older ones could easily amuse themselves in there for hours and it’s just metres from the apartments. A special mention has to be given to Percy the python snake, he lives on the roof of the gym and my three kids were fascinated with the slow-moving creature that has lived in harmony at The Oasis for more than eight years.

We ate out one night but cooked the next because the kids were tired after visiting the lighthouse and The Farm Byron Bay. This was made easy and stress-free because the apartment has a fully equipped kitchen and a dishwasher – winning! I made use of Foxtel to calm cranky kids and keep my husband amused while I soaked up the peace and quiet on the balcony outside with a cheeky wine.

The grounds and facilities are cared for meticulously well and include a tennis court, heated pool, poolside loungers and tables, a spa pool, sauna, gym and a few outdoor barbecue areas that are perfect for relaxing while the kids swim. Oh the serenity, the kids even got to see a few bush turkeys while we fired up the barbecue for lunch and I did nothing but listen to the sound of the ocean in the distance. The onsite manager is friendly but not intrusive, and as a mother with small kids I wanted for nothing at The Oasis, well except for a longer holiday.

When she’s not wrangling her three children, aged 3, 5 and 7, Gold Coaster and professional writer Emily Toxward (Have A Laugh On Me) juggles work, cooking for fussy children and parent helping at school. Escaping to the beach is her idea of paradise and writing about the trials and tribulations of life in an honest and often humorous way is her way of staying sane!
