2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show celebrates farmers
A fun – and crazy – day out for the whole family, the agriculture industry has always been at the heart of the Easter Show and 2014 is no exception. A number of exhibits will be on display that will enthral, excite and educate the youngsters, and we’re sure the parents will learn something too!
Every year, farmers from all across the country travel to the Show each year. Murray Wilton, General Manager Agriculture at the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW says that “over 14,000 animals and around 50,000 pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables” are expected to be on display this year. Exhibits that he recommends for the kids will teach them how to mill grain and shear sheep. There’s also the opportunity to feed baby animals at the Farmyard Nursery.
Being so separated from the farmers that produce 93 per cent of Australia’s domestic food supply in our metropolitan environment means that kids often don’t make the connection between what’s on the table in front of them and where it comes from. The Working Dairy aims to break down this barrier as they show what happens to the milk from when it leaves the cow to when it’s sitting bottled at the supermarket. It’s a great experience that everyone in the family can learn from.
Don’t forget to spend some time in the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome while you’re at the show. Home to the Districts Exhibits, each towering display contains over 10,000 pieces of fresh produce in spectacular designs, making them the largest of their kind in the world. The displays always make you wonder about the things you can do with food so don’t be alarmed if your kids decide to play Picasso with their dinner after coming home!
