5 reasons Coolangatta is GOLD for families

As a family we try to get away a couple of times a year in addition to our “big” holiday at Christmas. And although we like to change up the destinations there’s one place we keep coming back to time after time: Coolangatta and the Tweed Coast. Perched at the far southern end of the Gold Coast, Coolangatta is literally the last stop in Queensland before you hit New South Wales.

Unlike many areas of the coast it’s escaped the brash, overly “touristy” style of development and retained a lot of its small-town vibe. Here are the top five reasons we keep coming back each year.

1. Great Range of accommodation

Usually when we holiday at Coolangatta we are lucky enough to stay with my family at my step-father’s rambling 1950’s beach house. However last year, craving a bit of space of our own, we decided to see what sort of accommodation was available.

The answer turned out to be heaps, and I was particularly impressed by the choice and quality of accommodation available in the budget to mid-range price bracket. In the end we chose Mantra at Coolangatta and enjoyed every minute of our stay.

2. Beautiful beaches

When it comes to beaches you really are spoiled for choice with Coolangatta Beach (made famous by the classic Aussie beach flick “Coolangatta Gold”), Greenmount and Rainbow Bay all within walking distance.

We love going for a swim at the slightly sheltered Rainbow Bay, then walking around to Snapper Rocks to look for dolphins. During the summer there are often markets and other activities along the beachfront – the boys go to have a go on a turbo-charged trampoline while we were there in January!

3. Jack Evans Harbour

This sheltered inlet at the mouth of the Tweed River really is a one-stop entertainment precinct for families. The calm water is perfect for younger kids who are a bit freaked out by the waves at the surf beaches, and we’ve spent many happy days here splashing around with the boys when they were younger.

Now they’re older it’s also the perfect place for them to go for a paddle on their paddle skis. We have our own, but you can also hire paddleboats and kayaks from a stand on the Twin Towns side of the harbour.

4. Family friendly dining options

When it comes to great quality, family friendly dining that won’t break the bank you really can’t go past the local Surf Clubs. Again you have three to choose from at Coolangatta, Greenmount and Rainbow Bay, or four if you’re prepared to drive the short distance to Kirra Surf Club.

If you fancy something a little more upmarket there are plenty of family friendly options along the foreshore including our favourite, Earth & Sea Pizza.

5. Rainy Day Options

Any family holiday needs a few wet weather contingencies and Coolangatta has plenty to offer. Event Cinemas is conveniently located at The Stand, the newly redeveloped shopping centre on the esplanade. My boys also love to spend an afternoon exploring the amazing antique toys and comics at Twentieth Century Collectibles, the enormous antique shop located at the northern end of Coolangatta.

So if you’re looking for a holiday destination that is made for families, Coolangatta is your answer! The fantastic facilities, gorgeous beaches and relaxed atmosphere are guaranteed to provide holiday to remember.
