Luxury Melbourne Family Holiday

The Hilton South Wharf welcomes families with arms wide open as we discovered first hand on their “Family Fun in Melbourne” package. The hotel offers intimate service and stylish boutique touches within walking distance of Etihad Stadium, Southbank and some of the city’s best attractions while providing a luxe and lovely home away from home.

Our spacious two-bedroom suite is fabulous, as are the views over the city from the floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a kitchenette (which I view with a little distrust… I am, after all, on domestic leave), a dining area, a comfy lounge plus two massive bathrooms that, had we packed a cat, we could most certainly swing it in. In fact, it’s so lovely I’d be happy to stay put all weekend with my feet up and a bottle of something bubbly. But alas, we have kids in tow. Happily, the Hilton South Wharf has taken them into consideration too.

As part of our Family Fun in Melbourne package there’s a family pass to visit the Polly Woodside Tall Ship and Museum next door. So out we head for some fun of the nautical kind, as my wee scurvy sea dogs sign up to join the crew of the 129 year-old merchant ship where they scrub the decks and fire the cannons at unsuspecting passers-by.

Exploring Melbourne is a breeze with the free City Circle Tram passing so many of the major attractions. My little superheroes like to scale tall building in a single bound, or elevator, so Eureka Skydeck is our first stop. The highest viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere, my fearless family venture out onto The Edge – a three-metre transparent cube suspended over the city skyline. I, however, am not fearless and don’t share my children’s fondness for heights. To be honest, I had to pull on my big girl pants just to get in the elevator.

at Medibank Icehouse. From 12pm – 1pm the rink is dedicated to beginners and families which allows us to get our skates on without being bowled over. There’s a lot of squealing and giggling but that’s mostly from me as my husband falls repeatedly on his backside.

Back at the Hilton South Wharf, we don’t need to stress about where to go for dinner as our package includes an incredible roast dinner served in-room. Afterwards we pop the kids in their PJ’s and snuggle up to watch a movie from the in-room collection when there’s a knock on the door and room service presents us a bowl of fresh popped popcorn for us to nosh on. The Hilton South Wharf’s love of families is further revealed in little touches like the decadent chocolate layered babycinos that our waitress offers the kids at breakfast which, incidentally, are so good that we have to remind ourselves to stop eating and pack for our flight home.

There’s so much more kid-friendly fun to be found in and around Melbourne that we couldn’t pack in over a weekend. Admittedly we didn’t try very hard as we found it a little tough to tear ourselves away from our sweet suite at the Hilton South Wharf. But we’re left with so many things to tick off our Melbourne to-do list there’s no other solution but a repeat visit. Stat.
