An oasis of water park fun in Caloundra

Itís evident that loads of thought went into the construction of the childrenís water park and playground at Oaks Oasis Resort because the result is a safe and fabulously fun spot for under twelves.

The park, located in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, boasts fountains and a tipping bucket that has the kids holding their breath with anticipation as it dumps its contents at fifteen minute intervals as well as great slides where the water slows sliders towards the end of their rides, so no one gets knocked over by someone barrelling down behind them. I love watching the kids without having to hover and I suspect itís as good for them as it is for me.

A large playground abuts the water park, giving waterlogged kids an opportunity to dry out before returning to the slides. Parents havenít been forgotten either, the edges of the water park are well appointed with day lounges and shaded chairs and tables. Speakers dotted around the park offer something to listen to aside from the kidís squeals of delight. When not in use for childrenís parties, two marquees also provide an escape from the sun. And there is a handy kiosk selling snacks, drinks, ice creams and alcohol. The water park is for the use of resort guests as well as day visitors. Day use passes are $20 for the first child, $10 for subsequent children. Supervising adults are free.

The resort itself has recently undergone a refurbishment. The rooms are fresh and the beds are comfortable. The restaurant and pool are surrounded by a lily covered lagoon and on our recent visit we were lucky enough to spot two waterhen chicks on their nest. The resort’s Reflections Restaurant specialises in schnitzels but we opted to feed the kids from the pool-side menu and ordered in from nearby Caloundra. The buffet breakfast offering was reasonably priced and the kids ate for free with accompanying adults. I suspect the pancake machine may have inspired our girls to a career in engineering.

On her blog, Cooker and a Looker, Amanda Smyth serves up great tucker with a side of farm life. When she's not writing, she's spelling words out loud for her eldest daughter, distracting her youngest from unpacking the dishwasher and helping her husband on the farm all while dreaming of their next escape.
