At Port Phillip Bay, just 40 mins from Melbourne city, is the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary where we spent the afternoon with the Junior Rangers Program, exploring rock pools. We were met with smiles from our enthusiastic Ranger, Julia. A small group of ten children enabled the kids to get up close and personal with the marine life living in the pools and have all their questions answered by Ranger Julia.

They were given lanyards with pictures and words of the creatures they would discover, which encouraged them to think and learn for themselves in a hands on manner. We learnt which sea creatures eat meat and which eat plants and the kids increased their vocabulary learning new scientific terms. They learnt how to identify male and female crabs and all about the different plant life on the rocks. They learnt which creatures you do not touch and which creatures are okay to get up close to. The most important thing we learnt was if you do pick up a shell to examine it, always put it back in the same spot.

Children and parents (parents are required to stay and join in) were free to roam and explore at their own speed which provided a great opportunity for time to learn and explore together. At the end of the session the kids received a special badge and sticker for taking part and all agreed it was a 10/10 afternoon.

Programs run every school holidays so sign up for the email so you don't miss out on booking a spot.
