Point Lonsdale

South Coast of Victoria

Point Lonsdale is just over a hundred kilometres from Melbourne on the south coast of Victoria, part of the awe inspiring Great Ocean Road region on the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula.

As we pull into the main street, there is the light bustle of locals and holiday makers out for their evening walk overlooking the ocean which is just metres away. The sound of children splashing in the waves and playing on the play equipment just off the sand is all around. It is a relaxed, family friendly kind of vibe, with lots of smiles, nods and waves from passers’ by. Definitely my kind of beach town!

Within easy reach of popular seaside road trip destinations such as Geelong, Queenscliff, Ocean Grove and Torquay, you will find all you need for a fantastic family holiday in this charming, friendly little township.

We stayed in a gorgeous self-contained two bedroom unit at the Lonsdale Palms. The Palms offers accommodation for 2, 4 or 8 people in three home style dwellings, all on the same large block. The unit is spacious, with everything you could possibly need to make your stay a true home-away-from-home experience. It is private with a secure yard for little ones to safely roam and the adjoining games room has fun aplenty for young and old. A 200-metre walk will have your feet in the sand watching the waves roll in. Oh, and take the kid’s bikes, scooters and skateboards, because there is a skate park on the way to the beach.

From the Palms, it is a short drive to the picturesque Queenscliff, a town lush with history, safe tidal pools and beach areas for everyone to play in, including your dogs! Our little ones spent the most incredible days splashing in the water, observing and collecting all manner of ocean life. You could not wipe the smiles from their faces. Also, if you encounter a rainy day like we did, you can always entertain the kids by taking them to the Marine Discovery Centre, about half way between Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff.

Eating out in Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff has the usual takeaway and café style options, but not a lot for the gluten and lactose free foodie. However, being self-contained, means you can bring everything you need with you and the supermarket in Queenscliff has a terrific range of gluten and dairy free products to keep you going.

If you pop over the Ocean Grove, the Driftwood Café is the place to stop. Their menu is delicious, fresh and diverse, with lots of allergy friendly options and the service is fabulous. In the peak of Summer you will find all kinds of fun for the family including a mini carnival where the kids can tire themselves out riding the roller coaster, the ferris wheel, jumping on jumping castles and having an all-round good time.

The possibilities in Point Lonsdale and surrounds are plentiful!

When not partaking in pretend tea parties with her 2-year old daughter, or learning the finer points of playing Minecraft® with her 5-year old son, Jodie is the voice of Fresh Home Cook – a blog focused on food free from gluten and lactose but full of flavour the whole family will enjoy.
