A Sydney staycation at Crowne Plaza Coogee

Aleney de Winter spends a weekend in Coogee and discovers that a Sydney staycation is a relaxing and easy alternative to trip away from home.

While our kids are full of suggestions for an exotic family break, our winter holiday budget doesn’t quite stretch to trekking the Amazon jungle in search of a lost tribe prepared to make my son their king, or to traipsing all the way to Arendelle, so my four-year old can go ice-skating with Queen Elsa. But the call of a family getaway is almost as deafening as the silence when we rattle our moneybox to see how far our holiday funds will stretch. Not very, it turns out.

So the only logical solution is to keep it local… so local that we’re not even leaving town. Instead we’re driving 20 whole minutes to the Crowne Plaza Coogee where a spacious Ocean View Room with a sprawling private balcony overlooking glorious Coogee Beach awaits!

The sky is so blue one could be forgiven for thinking it’s summer and a giant bucket and spade set that’s been left as a welcome gift for the kids means we’re heading straight to the beach to make the most of the glorious weather. But not before stopping for fish and chips, a must on any beachside break.

But not before stopping for fish and chips, a must on any beachside break. After beating off the seagulls to finish lunch, the kids spend the entire afternoon playing happily in the sun on the near empty beach. They’re deliriously happy. As are we! We’re so much more relaxed than we would have been had we spent hours in transit to somewhere further afield.

Come dinnertime we head to relaxed and unpretentious Coogee Pavilion, one of the most kid friendly eateries I’ve stumbled across in Sydney, it is abuzz with happy families. The entire back end of the ground floor is an enormous indoor playground boasting table tennis, giant board games, wall scrabble, and building blocks. The kids’ smiles grow wider! I think we’ll be having a late night.

A buffet breakfast is one of our very favourite things and the Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach’s Bluesalt Bar and Restaurant doesn’t leave us disappointed! We fill up on eggs benedict, bacon and fresh baked pastries before we head off to explore the hotel’s gorgeous swimming pool area and tennis court. It’s a bit nippy for a swim but we’re definitely up for bashing around a few balls!

It may not be Arendelle but neighbouring Bondi answers my daughter’s ice-skating prayers with a pop-up beachside ice rink! The kids slip and slide joyously around it for an hour before we head back to Coogee for more exploring and playing in the sand. We end our leisurely day with wood fired pizza at the Crowne Plaza’s Oceans Dining & Drinks.

Before our holiday is over there’s only one thing left to make it complete! We run back to our room, don our PJ's, and call room service so we can scoff dessert while we snuggle up to watch a movie in bed! Bliss.

We may not have come far but holidaying “at home” at the Crowne Plaza Coogee has proved just as fun and even more relaxing than a holiday away. So much so, we may do it again next weekend!
