5 reasons families can’t miss a visit to the Blue Mountains this summer

From dinosaur encounters to the world’s steepest railway, Gemma Kightly finds there are plenty of reasons to rediscover this family favourite.

With summer well and truly here, the cool climate of the Blue Mountains has never looked so appealing for a family getaway. And this summer, there are more reasons than usual to add this destination to your to-do list.

1. Dinosaur Valley

Aspiring archeologists big and small will be thrilled by the hottest attraction to grace the region this summer, Dinosaur Valley. Uncover an ancient world in which dinosaurs reign supreme, learning all about the ancient species that once walked this exact area from Dinosaur Rangers during daily meet-and-greets. More than 20 animatronic dinosaurs are waiting to be discovered within Jurassic rainforest, and guided kids’ trails are free. Better move quickly, though, as the experience is only available until 28 January 2019.

Hot tip: Take advantage of accommodation package offers for great value.

2. The Scenic Railway

The most jaw-dropping way to discover the beauty of the mountains is on the steepest passenger railway in the world, whose glass-roofed carriages will take you through a cliff-side tunnel before emerging into the beautiful rainforest of the Jamison Valley floor. The train departs every 10 minutes.

Hot tip: Get a Scenic World Discovery Pass for access to the railway as well as the Skyway, Walkway, Cableway and Dinosaur Valley all in one.

3. The Jellybean Pool

The Jellybean Trail is a great kid-friendly option for families wanting to discover the Blue Mountains’ beautiful walking tracks, at only one kilometre return. Little adventurers will have their efforts rewarded by the pretty Jellybean Pool, where calm waters make the perfect place for a refreshing dip.

Hot tip: Avid bird watchers should bring along their binoculars!

4. Jenolan Caves

Another great way to stay cool is to hide from the summer rays in these stalactite-lined limestone chasms, carved over millennia by underground rivers and today acclaimed as one of the world’s most outstanding cave systems. The summer holidays are the perfect time to visit, especially to carry on the archeological fun. Scheduled kids’ tours will uncover fossils and hidden bones, and are appropriate for kids aged seven to 11 years.

Hot tip: Keep an eye out for the resident platypus, and be sure to book tours and activities in advance.

5. Fairmont Resort & Spa Blue Mountains

With unparalleled views of the surrounding national parklands, this upscale Leura resort offers something for every family member. For little holidaymakers, the dedicated KidsZone is sure to delight, complete with a mirror maze that’s bound to have them grinning from ear to ear. You’ll also find a merry-go-round, jungle gym, arcade games and pony rides, not to mention the resort’s own Fairmont Express Train.

Hot tip: Take advantage of the school holidays activity timetable so mums and dads can visit the on-site day spa.
