The Westin Resort Nusa Dua’s Kids’ Club is flying to new heights in true Balinese style. Rebecca Skinner reports. |
Not only has this Balinese resort revealed a US$13m facelift with spacious facilities for families, but also its kids’ club has risen to new heights. One of the favourite club activities is traditional Balinese kite making and flying. Throughout the island there are always kites dipping and swirling over beaches and paddy fields – helping to scare away birds from crops as well as being fun for little ones. So popular has the pastime become that there is now an international Kite Festival held in Sanur each July. Large groups from 350 villages can often be seen holding up traffic with their enormous and intricately designed 10-metre-long kites. At the Westin Resort Nusa Dua everyone can get into the creative act. While parents enjoy a drink in the Kite Bar, the kids get to work painting their own small, handmade kites before flying them on the beach. The Kids’ Club honours the creative Balinese arts, also teaching batik printing, mask making, beading and Balinese dance. To help burn off any surplus energy there’s also a climbing wall, table tennis and a variety of pools, one with a waterslide. At the multiple-award-winning resort, junior guests are particularly welcome, with their own check-in area where they are given a backpack containing a water bottle for free drink refills throughout their stay. And there is an optional Kids Pass for US$10 a day to cover all children’s meals when parents order food. The two-bedroom family suites overlook the tropical garden and pool, and offer space to really spread out. Each has a living room, complete with pint-sized furniture and games plus a 106-cm TV and DVD player. Even an extra adult can be comfortable on a sleeper sofa. In addition, an innovative ‘Love Your Family’ program offers movie nights and stargazing as a way of helping families to bond. Westin Resort Nusa Dua, www.westin.com/bali |
