Celebrity travel - Andrew Daddo

Andrew DaddoDespite leading a hectic life as a television travel presenter and being a prolific writer of children’s novels, Andrew Daddo still ranks the leisure pursuits of playing golf, fishing, surfing and spending time with his family highly on his agenda.

Andrew has spent half his life in the entertainment industry and has never shed his boyish sense of humour, which makes him a popular presenter on the Seven Network program The Great Outdoors.

Since joining the show in 2002, Andrew has visited more than 12 countries and taken 40 trips. In addition to his television duties, Andrew has embarked on a writing career that has seen him write 10 children’s books since 2000 including Muffin Top, Youse Two and You’re Dropped.

Recently, while talking about his entertainment career, Andrew was asked what he’d really like to do. He replied: “Fish a bit, golf, spend time with my family, write kids’ books that kids like to read, travel the world to remote destinations that make people green with envy, and, ah, maybe a little more fishing and golfing and travelling and family. Does that seem like too much to ask?”

Andrew DaddoWhere do you like to holiday with your family?

We camp on the Sapphire Coast every summer (Narooma) with three or four other families, which is great.

What do you remember about family holidays you had as a child?

Long drives with no air-conditioning, eye spy, funny stories, sun burn, surfing, Paddle Pops, fishing but not catching and sand in the bed.

Do you take the kids to places you went to as a child?

We have, but it’s also nice to find your own holiday spots.

What are some of your favourite things you like to do with the kids on holidays?

Be with the kids, first and foremost. We’re yet to put them in Kids’ Club because it seems to go against the idea of a “family holiday”.

What is your favourite family resort or hotel?

I don’t have a favourite. If it’s warm, and there’s the chance of cracking a wave, smashing a golf ball or hooking a fish – that place is for us.

Andrew DaddoAre you into beach, snow, adventure or cultural holidays?

Everything but snow, although Jac, my wife, is working very hard to change that.

Any tips on how to make a holiday with kids better?

Include them in your plans. If you set yourself up for a holiday of pampering and massages and shopping – you’ll get a bit of a shock when you find you’ve got to get something for the kids to do too.

Is there anywhere on your holiday wish list you haven’t been or would like to take the kids?

There is a whole world of places I’d like to take them. They’re pretty good travellers and generally interested so almost anywhere is up for grabs.
