Experience Perth

By Noelene Pearson

Ricey BeachImagine a strikingly vibrant city blessed with friendly, fun-loving locals and a glorious, sunny climate. Pristine oceans frame the city’s boundaries to the west, rolling hills adorn countryside to the east and a stunning river meanders through the city’s very heart.

Here you can experience awesome nature, history, action and adventure, world class arts, culture and dining. You can laze on white sandy beaches, visit wildlife and marine attractions, taste local fresh produce, stroll through fields of wildflowers and hike through acres of natural bush.

And it’s all on offer within a short distance of the city centre in the Western Australian region - Experience Perth.

This wonderfully vibrant capital city and its stunning surrounds provide all the essential ingredients of a truly great holiday with kids. In fact, the whole Experience Perth region offers a mix of vibrant contrasts ranging from the splendour of the coast to the depths of the forest, from the uncrowded beaches to the lively city streets.

In Perth itself you’ll find a pulsing city centre resplendent with a glorious selection of shops, attractions, family-friendly hotels, restaurants, galleries, theatres and museums.

Perth City also boasts the scenic splendours of the Swan River and Kings Park – both offering a wealth of activities suitable for the whole family to enjoy and get back to nature while remaining in the heart of the city.

For a maritime feel, take a half hour journey south to Fremantle on the coast where you can enjoy the carnival atmosphere of street performers outside the weekend markets, delight in the buzz of activity around the popular cafe strip and port or discover the many gorgeously restored historical buildings. There’s also a whole range of wonderful attractions to visit which are perfect for the whole family – try the Maritime Museum, the Motor Museum or the Fremantle Prison.

For an overseas holiday that fits any budget, jump on the ferry for a short trip to Rottnest Island and soak up the laid-back, beachside holiday atmosphere. The kids will love the little quokkas which are native to the island.

Fishing Boat Harbour, FremantleBack on the mainland, take the time to explore the ribbon of white sandy beaches along the aptly named Sunset Coast, which stretches from city beaches north to Lancelin. This stunning coastline is gateway to the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean and is a water lover’s paradise.

Further south at coastal Mandurah and Rockingham, the water is similarly appealing and boasts an incredible wealth of charismatic marine life, including the charming and graceful wild dolphins who inhabit the area’s waters. You can also take a tour from here to visit Seal Island and Penguin Island.

Otherwise head inland to the glorious Swan Valley, Perth Hills and Avon Valley. These regions of character buildings, national parks, rolling vineyards, quaint cafes, arts and craft galleries and hiking trails are well known for their gourmet delights and natural attractions. There are also some wonderful national parks, dams and lakes to visit along with a wealth of attractions suitable for kids.

With so much on offer, it’s no wonder Perth is attracting families on holiday from all over Australia.
