High on Hotham

Dragons! Topsyturvy villages! Mount Hotham is definitely not your usual ski resort.

Is there something a little odd about Mount Hotham?
A bright blue dragon glides serenely past but no one seems to find anything out of the ordinary; Harry the Snowdragon seems as much a part of the scenery as Mount Feathertop above.
And then thereís the layout. While most villages are happy to huddle in a valley with the slopes stretching above, Hothamís cluster of hotels and chalets is topsy-turvily placed atop the hill, with runs and lifts spilling out from either side of the Great Alpine Road. To one side, lines of blue- and black-marked runs wind into the valley; on the other, youíll find The Big D, the Summit Terrain Park and the dedicated beginnersí areas.

Magic of the mountain
Little ones have their own Kids Snowzone at Big D, a one-stop destination for lessons, child care and Harry the Snowdragon action. He even has his own free show every Wednesday and Saturday, with gift bags, glowsticks, singing and dancing!
On the snow, Hotham nurtures even the smallest skiers and riders from just three years. Last year, Hotham was one of the first Australian ski resorts to introduce Burtonís revolutionary Riglet Parks, introducing kids to snowboarding basics and balance with specially designed mini equipment. The programme is already a family favourite, returning this year to inspire the next generation of shredders.
For those who prefer two planks to one, Mighty Mites teaches skiing to kids between three and five, with a range of half- and full-day programmes. Even children as young as two can get a taste of on-theslopes thrills with Hotham Daycareís Introduction to Skiing, combining a full day of child care with an hourís lesson on skis.
Older kids from six to 14 can foster their passion for the snow in Kids Klub programmes, while advanced little speed demons can discover on-mountain adventure with the ski-only Grommets Free Ski Team. This six-day programme is a roaming exploration of Hothamís natural terrain and its parks, perfect for budding freestylers, while Interschools champions will want to check out the Hotham Race Squad to hone their technique.

Playing along
Whether your kids are barrelling down mountains or taking their first wobbly glides, theyíll all love the fun they can have at Hotham. As well as Harry the Snowdragonís stage appearance, thereís a ball to be had when youíre zipping along on a snowmobile. Choose from touring the back country with a guide (and optional barbecue) or let the kids take control on a mini snowmobile at the Hotham Snow-Stuff-Park. Children under 14 can enjoy driving in a fully supervised environment which also hosts toboggan runs, school-holiday weekend sausage sizzles, moulds for making the perfect snowman, and snowball throwers and shields. Yes, even the humble snowball fight has come a long way at Hotham!
