My husband considered a family holiday “just too hard!” Traveling with a 20 month old baby (and a ten year old) is not easy. However, we started by defining the elements that would make it a good holiday for all of us. We compromised to arrive at the following criteria: good weather, short plane trip, swimming pool, playground, 2-room accommodation, kids club, local attractions
We chose Mercure Resort in Surfers Paradise. So how did it stack up?
The Gecko’s Kids’ Club was free and a moderate hit with our ten year old. It seemed more suited to 6-8 years olds but she made some good friends and enjoyed evening sessions.
Junior Gecko’s was $25 per session and was a huge hit with our 20 month old. She didn’t want to leave and had a fantastic time - well worth every cent.
The extra room in the resort family suite worked beautifully. We paid a bit extra but it allowed our baby to maintain her usual sleep routines, which made life easier for all of us. The rooms are a bit old but quite comfortable. Next time we’d request a room overlooking the pool so we could supervise the ten year old while the baby was sleeping.
The kids’ pool was too deep for our 20 month old to toddle around in. Ideally, a resort that caters so well for children would have a proper toddler’s pool with a beach entry. I noticed there were a lot of toddlers at the resort so this would be a great improvement. Of course she loved the adventure playground and the junior gecko club so we’ll forgive them for the toddler pool.
I would highly recommend this resort to families and would definitely go there again.
