There's no place like Noosa

Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Sun, sand and seafood. Holidays with Kids discovers that Noosa has all the ingredients for a perfect Queensland getaway.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of boarding a flight on a Friday afternoon, knowing that in just two short hours you’ll touch down amid sun, fun and relaxation.

For a Sydneysider like me, a weekend getaway to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is a dream – even in ‘winter’ you can feel summery warmth. The scenic drive to Noosa Heads from the airport showcases the very best of the state’s coastline, which is particularly easy to enjoy without the thrum of bumper-to-bumper traffic I’m used to!

Passing the sparkling ocean from one beach to another was just what the doctor ordered, and I made mental notes to return to each cove on my next visit.

Beachfront bliss
Our dwelling for the weekend was Seahaven Noosa, a longstanding local favourite where upon arrival, amiable staff warmly ushered us to our room, where the home-away-from-home feel was instant.

From our two-bedroom family room we could hear the contagious laughter of children playing on the beach, and we were in a prime position to watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon on Main Beach.

Situated on world-famous Hastings Street, we were a stone’s throw from all the delights of Noosa, and our balcony provided an aerial view of the bustling world below. It was here we discussed our strategy. We were determined to experience as much of this region in two days as was humanly possible.

A holiday with flavour
Our thoughts turned to culinary pursuits, and for our first evening we ventured to Zachary’s on Hastings, a pizza bar just a short stroll away. Opting for the Hoisin Duck pizza, we were given a delicious introduction to this family-friendly venue.

Flavours like these are only a fragment of the rapidly expanding food scene in Noosa. Over the course of our stay we sampled everything from tasty muesli topped with fresh fruit to hamburgers stuffed with Southern fried chicken and a sauce so scrumptious the recipe is kept under lock and key. Noosa Heads Surf Club is the destination for delicious seafood; its self-proclaimed “oarsome” seafood dishes and full kids’ menu have something for everyone.

For the sugar-hound in your family, there are seemingly endless sweet treats that you won’t be able to resist. Thick, cinnamon-sprinkled French toast from Sirocco Noosa and coconut pancakes smothered in ice-cream from Cafe Le Monde were our breakfast favourites.

Down by the river
While the temptation to spend the entire weekend restaurant hopping was high, we wasted no time in making a beeline for the water. There is an ever-growing collection of ways to experience the waterways of Noosa, and one that is quickly garnering attention is stand-up paddle boarding. Testing our balance, we surrendered to the guides at Noosa Stand Up Paddle and embarked on our adventure.

Our friendly instructor led us leisurely along the very same river we’d recently admired over breakfast. It was great exercise but thankfully our two-hour tour had many stops and rests along the way.

After our fun upper-body workout, a stroll seemed in order. As any parent knows, kids are enchanted by animals, so we walked from Noosa’s Main Beach to the National Park in search of some wildlife. Upon arrival we were transported into a picturesque wonderland. Towering gum trees and dense scrublands shaded the way, with gaps in the shrubbery revealing views of the shining blue ocean. Be sure to watch for koalas above and pods of dolphins below; it made for the perfect game of ‘I Spy’!

Casting off
Still in search of water-based fun, though yearning for a more relaxed approached, we boarded the sunset river cruise operated by Noosa Ferry. Parents happily sat back and relaxed, cruising around the yachts anchored in Woods Bay, as little kids admired the luxurious waterfront homes on Noosa Sound.

Those that are skilled with a fishing rod may prefer to take control of the navigation and hire a boat as you wait with anticipation of that elusive bite. You can drop a line in the waters off Makepeace Island, and even if you don’t feel a wriggle, you’re guaranteed to catch serene views of the wildlife on the riverbanks.

Bidding our farewells to Noosa on a glorious Sunday afternoon wasn’t easy. After just two short days our skin was sun-kissed, our minds rested and tummies blissfully content. If it’s possible to feel that relaxed after just two days, I know exactly what the doctor will prescribe next time the city stress kicks in!
