Canada
Imagine travelling through the Rocky Mountains in Canada, with impossibly high peaks flanking icy lakes, and all around, a thick, fluffy blanket of snow. Throw in a visit from Santa, and you have the perfect family holiday for Christmas 2007.
Plan ahead and book your family in for the six-night/seven-day Winter Wonderland package from Rocky Mountaineer Vacations. It includes two days on the train from Vancouver to Banff, as well as six nights accommodation.
Kids simply love this train. They have their own special coach with an entertainer, craft and games. And when Santa delivers gifts for everyone, you can’t wipe the smiles off their faces.

On track in Europe
Europe is the perfect place for family rail travel. You can move from city to city, and country to country, in perfect comfort. But the big bonus is the kids can play cards or games, get up and move around, and they won’t get bored. It’s easy for parents too, with no arguments over map reading and no kids whining in the back.
The Eurail Pass is still the best way to go if you want to visit different cities. Consider the National Passes, which offer single-country travel, or the Regional Pass, which allows you to travel in two countries.
Eurail special reductions make the trip more affordable, too. Saver passes can be purchased for groups of two to five people travelling together, offering an average discount of 15 per cent off the regular price. In addition, children between the ages of four and 11 travel for half price and those under four years travel for free unless a reservation for a separate seat or bed is required.
While not part of Eurail passes, the Eurostar is a great way to get from London to Paris, and also stops at Euro Disney. It’s quick, comfortable and the kids will love the Channel Tunnel.

America by Amtrak
There is something really special about seeing America by train. Maybe it’s because you get to peek into people’s backyards rather than stare at the freeway all day. With 21,000 miles of track and more than 500 railway stations in 46 states, you can go where you want to go, and in style.
For Aussies, one of the most popular routes is the Coast Starlight, which runs between Seattle and Los Angeles. The Southwest Chief takes you from Chicago to Los Angeles, while Sunset Limited travels between Orlando and Los Angeles. Capital Unlimited links Washington to Chicago and the Acela Express runs between Boston and Washington.
The food on board is great, you can grab a sleeper if the trip requires it and the kids will be contented little vegemites, watching the world whiz by as they tuck into another Hershey Bar.
