Spring into Canberra

Springtime in Canberra is synonymous with Floriade, the largest floral festival in the southern hemisphere and Australia’s most colourful celebration of primavera. The annual festival, now in its 27th year, is running from Saturday 13 September to Sunday 12 October and will see the national capital shrug off its winter woollies and come alive with more than a million blooming flowers.

And while a garden show may not be the first thing that pops into your mind when planning a holiday with the kids, Floriade is most certainly an exception to the rule, offering an exciting programme of demonstrations, workshops and entertainment for every member of the family.

This year’s gardens and lineup of events are inspired by the theme “Passion” and there will be plenty of activities that get kids into the spirit. They will travel back in time and visit the dinosaurs, venture into outer space, feel what it’s like to be a giant wandering through a miniature village, or frolic in the Teddy Bear Garden and see one of their favourite stuffed companions come to life through blossoms. Meanwhile, mum and dad can pick up gardening tips from experts in the field, listen to inspiring musical performances and enjoy culinary demonstrations by world-renowned chefs.

For five magical nights from Wednesday 24 September until Sunday 28 September, Floriade will also come alive after dark with Night Fest transforming Commonwealth Park into an illuminated wonderland. This year’s ticketed twilight event promises a mix of dazzling lighting shows, famous comedians, roving entertainment and bustling night markets, all set amid fairy lights, lanterns and floodlit garden beds.
