Join the Party - P&O Cruises' Pacific Jewel Naming Ceremony

P&O Cruises has announced that the Governor-General of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will officially name its latest superliner Pacific Jewel in a spectacular ceremony at Sydney’s Circular Quay on December 12.

The ship naming will be the highlight of a memorable public event, which will feature a line-up of family entertainment and a stunning fireworks display. All proceeds from the evening will to go to the Governor-General’s nominated charities, the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia and Special Olympics Australia.

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line was deeply honoured that the Governor-General had accepted its invitation to name its latest ship.

Ms Sherry said the naming of a ship was intended to bestow good luck on a vessel and its passengers.

“It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to a time when ships provided the only link between continents, with the naming conducted by a female - usually a member of royalty or a prominent citizen.

“In keeping with this tradition, we are thrilled that the Governor-General has agreed to fulfil this important role and become the ship’s Godmother.”

Ms Sherry said she hoped Sydneysiders would join in the celebrations at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, with the traditional champagne smashing ceremony to be projected live onto the side of Pacific Jewel.

The evening will also include a celebrity singer, breathtaking aerial circus displays and performers, gourmet food stalls, as well as activities for kids including face painting and photos with Santa. The night will culminate in a fireworks display.

At 70,310 tonnes, Pacific Jewel will carry 2053 passengers and feature one of the largest spas at sea, an open-air deck with aerial stage for circus and music performances, a three-storey atrium foyer and almost 200 private balcony cabins, the most in P&O Cruises’ fleet.

The superliner will offer cruises from Sydney, with her maiden five-night voyage to Tasmania departing on December 13.

Fun & Interpretative Eco-activities for Kids

Mt Barney Lodge Country Retreat in Queensland is the perfect family destination with full creek frontage, open fireplaces, shade and a grassy camp ground. The lodge has a variety of fantastic educational activities for kids that can be booked at any time of year, but the CREATE program specifically targets kids over the busy school holiday period.

The CREATE (Children’s Recreational and Educational Activities That Educate) program is a range of fun, interpretative eco-activities for kids between six and thirteen years of age.

The Mt Barney Lodge Outdoor Leaders do a magnificent job of engaging the participants, sharing their knowledge in an age-appropriate way about the local geology, flora and fauna, aboriginal heritage and pioneering history, and connecting this to the beauty, natural sounds and the wild area that surrounds them. The outcome? A shared experience and an appreciation of the outdoors to be passed on to future generations.

Mt Barney Lodge won the QORF (Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation) Environment Award in 2007 and 2008, and was a finalist in the Queensland Tourism Ecotourism Award in the same years.

The most popular kids activity is the Kids Night Adventure – 2.5 hours of night time fun while mum and dad chill out around the campfire with some local Barney Creek Vineyard wine... it’s hard to say who it is more popular with!

For more information on the full range of activities visit www.mtbarneylodge.com.au
