The Sunny Side of the Alps!
The Alta Valtellina area has several mountains based around the towns of Bormio, Livigno and Santa Caterina Valfurva offering over 200km of ski runs. All levels of skiers and snowboarders are catered for, and the scenery is gobsmacking. Base yourselves in Bormio or Livigno, with its two ski areas - Mottolino and Carosello 3000 - and either stay put or venture out to try the other areas close by.
The ski schools are excellent, and it's easy to navigate around the slopes and to get back to base to pick up your kids and head out for a family ski together or do one of the many other fun activities this part of Italy offers.
In Livigno, there is tandem paragliding, go kart on ice, an ice driving school, snowmobile tours and high end fashion shopping - Livigno is a duty free village. In Bormio, there are two big and beautiful spa centres in historic Roman baths - sit in the heated waters and just enjoy the view over the mountains, and a huge modern swimming centre ideal for children. There's also the Husky Village dog sledding, which is highly recommended. They are great with kids and it's worth getting the professional photos afterwards - they are superb. For a day trip with a difference, book for the UNESCO heritage-listed Trenino Rosso del Bernina (Bernina Express) - a wonderful train journey from Tirano to St Moritz.
Both Livigno and Bormio will immerse your family in an authentic Italian atmosphere. In Livigno, enjoy sophisticated wining and dining alongside rustic, traditional architecture and old churches. Bormio is a real Italian medieval village, with its piazza featuring the village tower, the main church and the Kuerc, with its cobblestoned alleyways and centuries old buildings.
But a family ski holiday in Italy is not just about snow – you can add on visits to Milan, Verona or Rome to make it a true European adventure.
One of the great things about taking the kids on a snow holiday to Europe is giving them the chance to experience another culture, try learning a few words of another language and taste different food.
Ski Italy, owned and operated by Tania Peccedi, can tailor make a ski adventure for your family. Tania has kids, knows what families need and she most definitely know Italy, as she was born and raised in Bormio before marrying an Australian and moving to Sydney.
Fly into Milan, and enjoy a stopover in this fashion icon, before or after your snow holiday. For something really special, stay in one of the towns on pretty Lake Como, en route to Alta Valtellina.
