Top 10 reasons to ski Vail

Colorado, USA

If the value of the Epic Pass doesn’t get you, then these 10 other reasons will have you booking a family holiday at Vail, writes Rachael Oakes-Ash

1. Small group learning for kids
The Ultimate Four means your children will have personalised attention in small-group lessons of four kids of similar level aged three to 15 years of age.

2. Girls only ski lessons
Lindsey Vonn designed these premium Ski Girls Rock lessons for no more than four girls in each group aged seven to 15. Instructors are female and focus on both skill improvement and empowerment.

3. Eight kids' aventure zones
It is not just the kids that love Vail Mountain’s dedicated Adventure Zones. To enter, ski under wooden archways with names like Chaos Canyon, Magic Forest, Sherwood Forest, Porcupine Alley, Coyote’s Escape, Buckskin Glade, Pony Express and Bearclaw Glade. You’ll discover carved animals, 15-metre-long teepee structures and more.

4. Adventure Ridge
The kids will love Adventure Ridge high on Vail Mountain. When the lifts stop turning for the day then ski bike on the snow, get big air on a trampoline, go tubing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Then head indoors to Bistro Fourteen for a multi-course kids’ menu for $10.

5. CinéBistro premiere family movie experience
Put your feet up on leather rocking chairs and be waited on hand and foot with full service dining while checking out the latest feature films at CinéBistro. Now that’s Hollywood style.

6. Ten-pin bowling at bōl
Expect a full-service dining room, 18-metre bar and 10 lanes of bowling at bol in Solaris Plaza. Mum and dad can indulge in cocktails and wine served alley-side while junior struts his or her bowling stuff.

7. Ice skating
There’s not one, not two, but three ice rinks at Vail. Skate under the stars at the Solaris Plaza in Vail Village or hit up the outdoor ice rink at the Arrabelle Square at Lionshead. If you’re really keen then the Dobson Ice Arena has ice hockey and figure skating

8. Boasting pins
the EpicMix pins can be collected online for serious social media boasting rights. Every time your RFID lift pass is recorded you’re on the way to collecting a plethora of pins. There’s Blue Skyrider for those who ride every lift at Blue Sky Basin in a Day; Mount of the Holy Cross pin for getting a photo taken at Eagle Bahn; High Five if you ride the High Noon Express lift five times; and many, many more.

9. Burton US open
your ittle groms can see their idols up close at the Burton US Open with Sean White and Chloe Kim being regular competitors. The halfpipe is accessible from the chairlift with plenty of seats for viewing the best in the world every March.

10. Ski patrol dogs
Henry is the patriarch of the ski patrol dog pack at Vail Ski Patrol. You’ll most often find him at the top of Chair 4 at the Ski Patrol Hut under Buffalo’s. He’ll be the one lounging in the snow. Head inside to ski patrol and you might find Jake and the other adolescent ski patrol dogs begging for a pat.
