Mt Hutt isn’t just Canterbury’s own “big mountain” – it’s also one of New Zealand’s largest ski areas with some of the best natural snow around.
With an altitude of 2086m and a skiable area of 365 hectares, Mt Hutt has one of the longest vertical drops in the South Island and the greatest variety of terrain.
It also comes with spectacular views – on a clear day from the summit you can see the Pacific Ocean in one direction and into the heart of the Southern Alps in the other.
Just a 35-minute drive from Methven village, Mt Hutt is renowned for its big snow. It’s had a 10-year snow record both in terms of total snowfall and snow quality, and combined with 75 snow guns, Mt Hutt consistently has one of the longest snow seasons in the South Island.
Featuring modern chair lifts and world-class facilities, the ski area is perfect for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.
The trail network includes dedicated learning areas with a 140 metre-long magic carpet and wide, open runs for novices. Mt Hutt’s also a favourite with the most advanced snow lovers, who can experience steep challenges with off-piste areas and extensive powder bowls at the South Face or the Rakaia Chutes.
Mt Hutt has two progressive terrain parks – the mini park for beginners and novices and the 10,000sq m advanced-level TRIC park.
Radio frequency technology built in to lift tickets and season passes make access to Mt Hutt’s ski lifts quick and easy for skiers and riders. Youngsters aged three months to five years can be enrolled in Mt Hutt’s fully-licensed Skiwiland Early Learning Centre. There are also a variety of programmes for kids of all levels from 5 -15 years, including school holiday packages.
Parents can relax and enjoy a glass of wine on the base building’s sunny deck. Many regular visitors set up portable barbeques in the parking lot for informal lunches.
