Walk-in Aviary, Canberra

PrincessWalk-in Aviary is a large aviary planted with trees and shrubs where the birds fly free. There are over 500 birds living in the aviary, consisting of around 350 finches and 200 parrots. The parrots are mainly Australian varieties and there are about 30 varieties of finches, 15 of which originate from overseas.

The birds breed in the aviary and some of the young parrots are hand-reared and therefore are quite friendly and will even sit on your hand, allowing you to feed them.

Customers are given a piece of apple on entry to feed the parrots.  Wheelchair access and some seating is available.  The birds are fed at opening and at closing time.  During very hot days, they sit in the trees and one has to look hard to find them.  The aviary is closed when very hot and when very wet.
