Explore the wilds of Africa, Asia America and Australia in just a few hours, or take a day or two. Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo is Australia’s leading open range zoo, set in 300 hectares of bushland with Australia’s only African Elephant herd and the endangered Black Rhinoceros.
Wild Asian Wetlands is the latest display at Western Plains Zoo, featuring the only Greater One-horned Rhinoceros in the southern hemisphere and a remarkable family of five feisty Oriental Small-clawed Otters.
Some of the other new attractions include a baby Black Rhinoceros born in April, a White Rhinoceros born in March and a gangly Giraffe born in May.
Western Plains Zoo is home to more than 1,400 animals and Zoo visitors can enjoy their ‘safari’ around the world by travelling around the undulating ring road by car, on foot or by hiring one of the many electric vehicles or bicycles. There are also 15 km of bushwalking trails which wind throughout the 788 hectares of Zoo grounds.
Another highlight at Western Plains Zoo are the popular early morning walks which take visitors around the grounds and behind the scenes for a secret glimpse into Zoo life. The walks begin at 6.45am each weekend, with additional walks on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school holidays.
