CAPE TOWN
Table Mountain This magnificent sandstone mountain in the centre of Cape Town offers sprawling views of the city and beyond from its 3 kilometre flat “table top”. You can hike to the top of the mountain or take the scenic cable car ride. At the top you’ll find a restaurant, souvenir shop and viewing platforms and “dassies” (the common term for the Cape hyrax or “rock rabbit”, a small rodent-like mammal) lazing in the sun on the surrounding rocks.
Robben Island 12 kilometres out to sea, opposite Cape Town’s bustling harbour is the slightly eerie Robben Island, which served as a place of banishment and imprisonment for over 400 years. It was here that Nelson Mandela spent many of his years in prison here. Take a boat to the island from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and visit the fascinating Robben Island Museum.
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Set between Table Mountain and Robben Island, this is the heart of Cape Town’s working harbour. Here you’ll find many of Cape Town’s plushest hotels and apartments, luxury yachts moored in the marina, a range of cafes and restaurants and plenty of things for the visiting family to see and do. From here you can visit historic buildings and museums, catch a movie at the IMAX theatre, visit the craft market, board a boat or sea plane ride or take a scenic helicopter tour. There’s also a resident population of Cape fur seals.
Two Oceans Aquarium On the Waterfront you’ll find South Africa’s largest aquarium, Two Oceans Aquarium, featuring stunning educational exhibits displaying the marine life of the warm Indian Ocean and the icy Atlantic. Large sharks cruise in the predator tank in a forest of five-foot high kelp. Kids activities include a touch pool and face painting, drawing and puzzles in the aquarium’s Alpha Activity Centre.
Planetarium Adjoining the SA Museum is the delightful Planetarium, a domed auditorium in which is housed a stunning recreation of the night sky. Audio-visual shows simulate panoramic terrestrial landscapes and celestial subjects.
Cape Point Nature Reserve Cape Point Nature Reserve gives you the chance to spot mammals and birdlife and wildflowers only 35 minutes away from the centre of Cape Town. Sitting at the South Western tip of Africa the park encompasses some truly breathtaking scenery, with rugged coastal cliffs, 18 wild and beautiful beaches and plenty cool, crisp sea air to invigorate you as you hike or mountain around the park’s many spectacular trails.
