The Puzzling World of Stuart Landsborough

Tumbling TowersIn a country famed for its ingenuity, there can be no better example of successful kiwi innovation than 'The Puzzling World of Stuart Landsborough'.  In December 2003, this totally unique tourist concept located in Wanaka, Central Otago, celebrated 30 years of 'puzzling eccentricity', attracting 1.5 million visitors from all over the world since its inception in 1973.

Owner and originator, Stuart Landsborough, leads the world with the creation of the first modern style great maze. His unique concept of  'puzzling eccentricity' is still delighting people from every part of the globe.

From an initial wooden maze built in 1973, Puzzling World now boasts a number of world firsts in terms of unique attractions or world’s best:

  • The original wooden maze is now the ‘Great Maze (Labyrinth)’, the world’s first three-dimensional two-storey modern style great maze.

  • Leaning Tower of WanakaThe 'Tilted Illusion House' boasts a floor tilted at a 15-degree angle creating illusions that question a visitor's understanding of reality.

  • The 'Hall of Following Faces illusion room' contains 168 giant faces creating two unbelievable illusions.

  • The 'Hologram Hall' specialises in three-dimensional photographs and is the largest hologram exhibition in Australasia.

  • The 'Ames Forced Perspective Illusion Room' offers amazing illusions.

  • Even the famous Italian city of Pisa has been outdone with the 'Leaning tower of Wanaka'. This concrete tower is balanced on one corner at an incredible 53 degrees and features a backwards-ticking clock started on the stroke of the year 2000. This offers an intriguing and popular photo opportunity!

  • The 'Puzzling Café' offers refreshments with a plethora of puzzles for all ages to master, and even the toilets offer a unique photographic opportunity! The Roman-style toilets with a magnificent diorama (mural) are often occupied with camera-toting patrons.
