The annual celebration returns 9–27 January 2019 transforming the city with theatre, music, art, circus and more. This year’s program is packed with shows and events for families to get involved in.
Here are our picks that the whole family can enjoy:
Circus Comes to Town A weekend of family circus performances and activities in Parramatta’s Prince Alfred Square including Heliosphere, Mallakambindia performances, Aerialize workshops and Flying Trapeze workshops. (11–13 January, Prince Alfred Square, Parramatta).
Heliosphere A giant, glowing lunar balloon filled with helium suspends an aerialist 20 metres above the crowd. Working with two technicians on the ground, the aerialist performs elaborate twists, turns and tricks to create the illusion of weightless levitation, swooping down to shake hands with the audience one minute and soaring back up into the skyline the next. (9 January, Barangaroo; 11–13 January, Prince Alfred Square, Parramatta).
Mallakambindia A rare opportunity to see five of India’s top Mallakhamb artists perform, accompanied live by Mumbai-based musician Donn Bhatt. Combining gymnastics, wrestling and aerial yoga, these extraordinary artists eloquently perform feats of strength, poise and dexterity in a physical spectacle that borders on the impossible. (11–13 January, Prince Alfred Square, Parramatta).
Aerialize A range of affordable workshops for all ages and abilities covering everything from aerial skills and flying trapeze to and mini trampolining, including a new Circus Ninja Warrior Course for children and adults. (11–20 January, Riverside Theatres).
Flying Trapeze Hands-on, two-hour workshops with Sydney Trapeze School introduce you to the art and guide you through a warm up and low-level practice, before you harness up to learn high flying trapeze tricks. (11–13 January, Prince Alfred Park, Parramatta).
