Norfolk Island

An undiscovered family getaway

People in colonial clothingIs there still a place in this world where McDonalds doesn't exist, where you can go our for the day, leaving your front door wide open, and even leave the car unlocked with the keys in the ignition?

If you are after a holiday that will transport you back in time to when family holidays were all about spending quality time together and enjoying nature-based activities, then pack up the kids, snorkelling gear and suntan lotion, and return to life in the slow lane.

Prepare to rediscover the meaning of a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday. Norfolk is said to have the freshest air on earth next to Antarctica. This, combined with all the home-grown fruit and vegetables, and outdoor activities to enjoy, will soon give you all that healthy Norfolk glow.

A tiny speck in the South Pacific - only 8 km by 5 km and just 2 ½ hours' flying time from Brisbane or Sydney - Norfolk Island, with its colourful history, warm people and scenic beauty gives you the opportunity to do as much as you like or as little as you like.

Norfolk Island has long been thought of more for the seniors market than for the youth or family market but that is all changing  much to the distress of our older generation. They have kept Norfolk’s’ secrets to them selves for long enough!

On a recent trip there we loved it so much that we extended out stay by an extra 5 days. My two daughters aged 12 and 13 really enjoyed the beach and the snorkelling and wanted to go to Emily Bay first thing every morning. We all enjoyed the local people and their friendliness. The shopping and the rejuvenating atmosphere were an added bonus.

The kids loved finding out that the ducks and cows actually have the right of way on the roads and were quite intrigued that the driver of every car we passed waved to us. They also enjoyed horse riding, the themed dinner and the history of the tours that we went on.

The kids will learn more here than in the classroom from the re-enactment of the Mutiny of the Bounty and the Sound and Light show that recreates the way life was when Norfolk was used as a penal settlement.

Norfolk Island MapThis stunning Pacific Island is perfect for families with children of all ages so discover it for yourself. It is easily accessible, and offers some excellent family packages that include a vehicle for the length of your stay. With its temperate climate, glorious beaches and rolling green hills, , Norfolk Island offers families the chance to enjoy a beach holidays and a rural escape in one.

Do make sure, though, to sample some of the restaurants on the island and be sure to try the Fish Fry at Puppies Point as the sun sets on the ocean, and sample traditional island fare at Cats Cafe or the Castaway Hotel.

Apart from its unique natural beauty, Norfolk Islands other blessing is its fascinating cultural history, from its beginnings as an island home for the Polynesian people to its discovery by Captain Cook in 1774 and the establishment of the first penal settlement in 1788.

This is a holiday that will transport you back in time to when family holidays were all about spending quality time together enjoying nature-based activities.

This destination was a surprise to us, as initially we were not sure if it was really a family destination. After our family experience we  have no hesitation in recommending it to our readers.
